War Comes to and End
In February 1945 the “Big Three,” Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin met in Yalta to discuss what they were going to do once the war with Germany ends. They agreed to wage war with the Japanese as soon as Germany surrendered. They planned on splitting Germany into four zones to be occupied by themselves and France, each getting one zone. A second meeting was planned in April taking place in San Francisco to create the United Nations. At first, Stalin was set on maintaining its hold on Eastern Europe to prevent future outburst. However, Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt were in favor of putting power into the people’s hands. Stalin was promised the return of the land lost during the Russo-Japanese War of 1905. He eventually agreed to let Eastern Europe hold free elections.
