About Operation Overlord
Operation Overlord was the name of an invasion that was to be done by the allies and it was an invasion of France and it was set to be done in the month of June 1944. General Dwight Eisenhower was the overall commander of the operation. The last day of the operation is also known as 'D-day'. This plan was
special; "The first issue that the Allies had to decide on was where to land in France" (Trueman, 2015). That issue was resolved by the geography, they figured that Pays de Calais was closer to Britain, so it was settled that they were to land there. From there the first plan was COSSAC, "This included a plan to use two airborne brigades to protect the flanks of the three landings in Normandy" (Trueman, 2015). Another issue was getting the supplies together for invading. They were looking for a safe place to keep things away from German spies. In the end the planning was proven to have been done very well, "Overlord had built into it the movement of a total of 3 million men in 47 divisions, moved by 6000 ships with aerial cover provided by 5000 fighter planes" ( Trueman, 2015).
