Just before 8 a.m. on December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. Bombs and bullets rained onto the vessels tether below. Ten minutes later at 8:10, a 1,800-pound bomb shattered through the deck of the battleship USS Arizona .The ship exploded and sank with more than 1,000 men trapped inside, there was nothing they could have done to get out safely. Following that, torpedoes pierced the shell of the battleship USS Oklahoma. There were 400 sailors aboard, and the Oklahoma just could not hold her balance so she ended up rolling onto her side and slipped underwater. When the attack had come to an end, every battleship in Pearl Harbor which was USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, USS West Virgin , USS California, USS Maryland, USS Utah, USS Nevada, USS Pennsylvania and USS Tennessee had been through some heavy and unforgettable damage.
The attack went on for two heartbreaking hours, which may not seem like a long time but the amount of damage that was created was a lot.: The Japanese destroy about 20 American naval vessels, eight of them being gigantic battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors lost their life's in this attack, and 1,000 people were wounded. Along with that, 300 airplanes were demolished during the attack. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise, however Japan and the United States had been bumping heads toward war for decades. The Americans were not capable of fighting back as Japan's armed forces spread across the pacific so it seemed to be an easy target for Japan. The day after the attack, the president at the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt, asked Congress to declare war on Japan. The congress approved his declaration with just one single vote, Three days after, Japanese allies, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, and again Congress repay. Than two years into the conflict, America had decided to join World War II.
